Malaga, Spain – Today, December 15th, 2017, Dyntra, ANEEJ (African Network for Environment and Economic Justice) and USAID (United States Agency for International Development) launch the first dynamic index of transparency in the management of oil and gas resources.

Nigeria is known for its oil and gas industry, it is the largest oil producer in the African Continent and it has the 10th largest proven reserves. Unfortunately, according to the World Bank, most of Nigeria’s oil wealth gets siphoned off by 1% of the population, which makes corruption in the government rampant. In fact, since 1960 it is estimated that 300 to 400 billion dollars has been stolen by corrupt government officials.

ANEEJ, The African Network for Environment and Economic Justice, a non-government organisation based in Nigeria that implements projects related to democracy and anti-corruption, has considered that it needs to engender the transparency, accountability and prudence in the management of resources accruing to the Niger Delta Interventionists Institutions.

Dyntra.org, the 1st global citizen-driven Smart Data platform that measures in real-time and ongoing the transparency of public organisations, was chosen by ANEEJ and USAID as the ideal platform to implement the Niger Delta Transparency Index due to its dynamic approach, real-time cloud evaluation capabilities, and its international experience and knowledge in transparency and open government.

Already more than 4,200 organisations in 201 countries are in the Dyntra platform with the participation of nearly 1,000 evaluators and over 400 media sources that use Dyntra as a source.

“Bringing online dynamic real-time citizen-driven transparency evaluations to the African Continent will catapult the efforts of African governments and non-government organisations, like ANEEJ, that are fighting for more transparency and open government not only to the next level but also will project them as the leaders to follow”, says Erwin de Grave, International Relations Director and Co-founder of Dyntra. “Even more, you could say that this could be the start of a ‘transparency revolution’ in Africa by the citizens and for the citizens”, adds de Grave.

The Niger Delta Transparency Index will measure the transparency of the 7 Niger Delta Interventionists Institutions through 49 indicators organised in 5 categories: Access to information and public disclosure, Synergy with other NDIs/Niger Delta development agencies and government agencies, Consultation with communities/other stakeholders and inclusion, Transparency in procurement process, and the institution’s integrity. This will result in a Transparency ranking that will position the institutions based on the results obtained.
